Sports Injuries
Sports Related Injury in Canal Fulton and Canton
Athletes are constantly pushing themselves to the limits, putting pressure and strain on their bodies to perform. The upper and lower extremities are commonly encountered sports-related injuries. Shoulder disorders are common in athletes participating in swimming, tennis, pitching, and weight lifting due to repetitive overuse of the arms.
Common Shoulder Conditions Include:
- Sprains and strains — a sprain is over-stretching or tearing of ligaments (connect bone to bone). A strain is overstretch or tearing of muscle or tendon (connect muscle to bone).
- Tendinitis — inflammation of a tendon due to injury or overuse.
- Bursitis — inflammation of a fluid-filled sac called a bursa which protects and cushions your joints.
- Rotator cuff injury — The rotator cuff is comprised of tendons and muscles which hold the bones of the shoulder together and allow you to raise and lower your arms.
- Fractures
- Arthritis — Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritic affliction of the shoulder and is characterized by progressive wearing away of the cartilage of the joint.
- Myofascitis — This is a pain disorder of muscles which results in very tender, contracted trigger points which do not go away with rest.
Common Elbow, Wrist, and Hand Conditions Include:
- Sprains and strains
- Tendinitis
- Elbow epicondylitis (e.g. tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow)
- Carpal tunnel syndrome; cubital tunnel syndrome
- Myofascitis
- Arthritis
Common Foot and Ankle Injuries Include:
- Sprains and strains
- Plantar fascia strain — this is a tear of the band of fascia which runs the length of the sole. Pain in the sole is felt immediately from sudden overstretching and is often accompanied by a lump under the sole.
- Plantar fasciitis — this is likely the most common cause of heel and sole pain. It is often associated with fallen arches and hyperpronation of the ankle.
- Overpronation — this is often recognized as a flattening or rolling in of the foot. It can alter the timing of ankle/foot movements and be contributory to foot pain, leg pain, and other injuries.
Common Neck and Back Injuries Include:
- Sprains and strains
- Disc injuries, herniations, and tears
- Fractures
- Myofascitis — This is a pain disorder of muscles which results in very tender, contracted trigger points which do not go away with rest.
- Lower back injuries — these are commonly seen in collision sports (football), repetitive-impact sports (running), spinal-rotation sports (golf), and in weight-loading sports (weight lifting).
- Neck injuries — these are often seen in collision sports.
- Upper back and rib injuries — the thoracic spine is less prone to injury than the neck or lower back due to its relative immobility and to the protective attachments of the rib cage. These injuries are often seen in collision sports, swimming, golf, tennis, skiing, and in other sports that require repetitive rotation of the torso.
